Clothing that makes a difference

History of One Man's

On March 22, 2005, eight people met in Mary and Dick's dining room to discuss what they could do to help the ex-offenders who were being released into the Dallas area. Mary had come in contact with several of these men while volunteering at the clothes closet of the East Grand Foundry Church in Dallas. These men needed good clothing, not only for day-to-day living, but also for employment interviews and jobs. Mary searched for an area church to host a clothes closet but found nothing available.

Mary and Dick decided to rent storage space for a clothes closet and began collecting clothes from family, friends, neighbors, and church members. The clothes closet became part of Freedom in Community Restorative Ministry, a 501(c)(3) charity. One of the first clients of the clothes closet named it "One Man's Treasure."

The number of clients served by One Man's Treasure has steadily grown since its creation in 2005. Monetary and clothing donations and grants from several organizations allowed One Man's Treasure to move into a new location with office and warehouse space in January of 2007. That year volunteers of One Man's Treasure delivered 2,255 shirts, 902 pairs of pants, 451 pairs of shoes, 2,255 pairs of underwear and socks, and 451 T-shirts to clients in the Rockwall/Dallas area.

Now in its fourth year of operation, One Man's Treasure is blessed to receive many phone calls and thank-you letters from clients, some of whom later become shepherds (male volunteers who deliver the clothing to the clients). Testimonials from men we have served have reinforced our philosophy that this ministry is vitally necessary.
